Social Media and Academic Careers on IHE

August 7th, 2009 · No Comments · General

When I saw the title for the below link in my email, I thought “Oh boy, another ‘don’t-put-anything-on-the-internet-because-it-will-kill-your-career’ post,” and prepared to blog about how this culture of paranoia is hurting academia, etc., etc.

Blog U.: Ask the Administrator: Social Media and Academic Careers – Confessions of a Community College Dean – Inside Higher Ed.

But you know what? It is really a grounded and frank assessment of the situation that says, basically, that this particular administrator has not experienced or observed anyone not getting a job at his institution because of social networking activity. It was a little refreshing. I’m sure, however, that the comments section there (and maybe here) will be full of counterexamples and warnings, which is not bad — maybe we need to revisit this issue from time to time.
